Mission impossible
Home minister P Chidambaram has seriously crossed the line this time. He not only hopes to host the Commonwealth Games successfully but has also had the audacity to tell Delhiites to behave properly.
He wants people from Delhi and the national capital region to inculcate manners of a good, big international city.
I really doubt whether it will ever happen. Something, like Delhi culture, which took years to develop to be what it is today, cannot be changed within an year. It would be akin to asking a zebra to give up its stripes.
This is surely no laughing matter. The pursuit of good manners could take a huge toll in terms of men and material. For instance, seeing a yellow light going red will cause a chain of accidents because some would try to slowdown, while others would try to jump the light. And then drivers will start yelling and beating each other and onlookers will also join the melee.
Another set of problems could emerge in Blueline buses if conductors and passengers try to go overboard on the issue. There might be frequent exchanges of obscenities and an occasional bloodied nose. Passengers might get thrashed by conductors for trying to board an overloaded bus, or conductors might get bashed up for trying to stop passengers from boarding the bus.
Commonwealth Games Federation head Michael Fennell had already expressed his displeasure at Delhi’s readiness to host the games, and the government might think that such incidents could aggravate the fears that Delhi is really not ready.
We can easily dismiss the fears expressed by the chief of the Commonwealth Games Federation, but the reputation of our country and our Capital is also at stake, and it seems nobody bothers to walk the talk.
