Leadership in the changing world

Leadership is one of the most observed and studied concepts in the world from time immemorial. From the time the written history of all civilizations in the world is available, there have been innumerable leaders who stand out in their own fields, may be political, military, spiritual, art, literature, sports, science or for that matter any field. Leadership is multidirectional, non-coercive and involves the influence of people to bring about change towards a desirable future. It could be expressed as the ability to influence people to move willingly and enthusiastically to achieve common group objective in a synergetic manner.

One of the key crises of business organizations as well as human societies is leadership. Today, more than ever, there is a need for leaders who have concern for balancing business objectives with human needs, building organizations which can be great places to work as well as centers of excellence, and balancing both concern for the wellbeing of others as well as for the advancement of society. One of the characteristics of great leaders has been their capability to build agenda and respond to the followers' psychological requirements from leaders. Contemporary world is moving towards an egalitarian value system where people are shifting from compliance to questioning.

In a nation as diverse as ours, it pays to build culturally inclusive leadership. A lot of Indian corporates, including the so-called professional ones, have relied on family, friends and community to build the circle of leadership. It is time India Inc invested in leadership, to be among the very best.
