An endless wait

We live in a democratic country. We have the right to choose our leaders. But where are the good leaders?
The election season is on and campaigning is going on in full swing. The candidates are using innovative modes of campaigning through television, radio and even mobile phones. All the political parties are trying hard to win over as many voters as they can by adopting various means.
Leaders who have never stepped out into our neighbourhood after winning the previous elections have re-surfaced in our area again. But people are not amused. That’s the reason why we so often hear about some leaders being welcomed with shoes instead of garlands. You also realise that most of India’s political leaders lack leadership qualities. According to American leader and author, Jim Rohn, the challenge of leadership is to be strong, but not rude; kind, but not weak; bold, but not a bully; thoughtful, but not lazy; humble, but not timid; proud, but not arrogant; have humour, but not folly. These qualities are missing in most of India’s political leaders. No wonder the common people are unhappy with their government and leaders, and that’s why shoes have played a prominent part in this elections. The shoe-flinging habit has become infectious. It has crossed boundaries and one is waiting to see which leader is going to be targetted next.
Our country, especially its youth, is still waiting for a leader and a government, who understand India and her diverse people. For, a good leader is one who has the ability to lead and dictate the course of the government. He must be enthusiastic about work, tolerant and remain calm in the face of adversity. The leader must also focus on all the promises made and should be committed to excellence in all walks of life. It may be a tall order. But we are, nevertheless, willing to wait.
