A bruised unit

The Indian test team looks like a totally bruised unit ahead of the two-test series against South Africa at home. Touted as the world championship of cricket, the second ranked Proteas will challenge a side that has been there and done it all during its relentless march to the top in the past twelve months.
With Dravid, Yuvraj and Laxman joining the injured list, the entire middle order seems to be in a tizzy. Dravid seems unlikely to return for the first test starting next week after being hit on the jaw by a bouncer in the second test against Bangladesh. Laxman and Yuvraj have ample time to recover from minor niggles that trouble them before the South African series starts. However, the Indian batting order looks weary in front a full strength South African bowling attack.
Two-time triple centurion Chheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma and Suresh Raina have been banging on the doors as replacements for the fading Fab Five. It remains to be seen as to who among the young turks really gets to inherit the mantle. The chairman of selectors has reposed his faith in make-shift openers Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli.
South African bowlers, including young speedster Wayne Parnell, must be smacking their lips after seeing the top order succumb to short balls against Bangladesh. At least on paper, the South African team looks stronger than the one that came to the country exactly two years ago.
With IPL just a month away, it remains to be seen whether players are more concerned about winning the series or saving themselves by avoiding injuries in the test series. Also the craze for IPL may see lesser crowds in the stands.
India needs to stick to their basic test line up, provided the players are available. Harbhajan needs to prove that he is India’s best spinner by taking wickets when needed. The series will provide a big chance for youngsters to cement their place in the side.
