All about baby fad
Some fads in the world are not just drawing attention but also make one wonder as to how there are blind followers to every trend. The other day, the parents of a soon-to-be married couple announced, “Apart from having a baby from Vietnam and Malawi in Africa, we would like them to have one of their own as well.” I thought it’s a take off on the adoption fever that’s hit international celebrities until I realised that the fashionable duo were indeed planning on a few international babies to complete their with-it image. While there is nothing wrong in adopting children from different nationalities, doing it to make a style statement is devaluing the importance of children and is no different from wanting a Chihuahua as your latest pet.
It is a sad reflection of a society that is becoming so obsessed about keeping up with the Joneses that they have lost the sense of reason. Celebrities have been adopting orphans from third world countries, sometimes allegedly to divert attention from a controversy. Angelina Jolie, they say, was given a facetious award for publicity ploy by comedian Jimmy Kimmel for the way she diffused
outrage over her perceived stealing of Jennifer Aniston’s husband Brad Pitt by adopting an Ethiopian baby. An act that spurred many other celebrities to follow suit, but not all for selfish
reasons. They’ve even been credited for broadening the definition of a desirable adoption that could expand to any race. Like TV show host Russell Peters says, "Cultures are merging, and we’re all going to end up not black, white, brown or yellow but beige." If the trend is to start in our country, instead of adopting a baby from another third world nation, we could just adopt a baby from another part of country. Say, how about a north Indian family adopting a baby from south India or vice-versa.
