At the last Barcamp in Mumbai, a young man drove into IIT-B in a bright yellow Porsche Boxer. He immediately had the respect of all the young techies. This time when he was introduced as a 29 year old that had built a 300 million dollar company he had the respect of all ages. People in the audience, some almost twice his age, showed respect in their facial expressions.
The seemingly constantly-wired young man laid out a crisp and clear presentation on the 7 Principles in the game of business.
The first rule is to ensure that everyone knows the rules of the game. He compared it to a football team. "Many CEOs make the mistake of micro-managing," he said, "That is like playing foozball, where one person tries to control all the players. When every player knows how to play, then it becomes football." He summed it up by saying, "When all the players know the dynamics of the business, then they all begin to think and act like management."
Principle 2 was - Share the Macro Vision. This way all the players know the final goal. Do they play just for the season or the world cup?
Principle 3 is to set near term goals. This way the goals are visible and seem more achievable.
Principle 4 - Keep score. This was Bhavin's favourite principle as he highlights in the video that is available on mydigitalfc.com . Here he asked the audience to measure everything that is possible. Choose numbers that are critical to the business. This way the team can keep track of their own and overall performance.
These numbers, he said, makes the the whole game challenging and gives a sense of purpose. Let people set their own targets as this will make them want to make it. He illustrated this with the Netscape Navigator example, where a bell was installed in the Netscape office. Every time someone downloaded Netscape the bell would go off. Soon the bell didn't stop ringing.
Principle 5 - Line of Sight
"Each player can link their own actions to the outcome of the game."
Principle 6 - Celebrate your victories
Principle 7 - Align everyone's interests
"To the victor belong the spoils"

He rounded it off with the quote "A company performs best when its people see themselves as partners-- where they concern themselves not just with their jobs but with the overall objective of the game."
