The Progressive Alliance Government in Meghalaya is facing mounting pressure to scrap six controversial power projects after key allies, the UDP and the NCP, continue to oppose the "shady" agreements signed with private companies.
United Democratic Party MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh said shortly after a party meeting late last night that the party has urged Chief Minister Donkupar Roy to scrap the deals.
Echoing similar views, Nationalist Congress Party president W R Kharluki also demanded scrapping of the deals "in the interest of the people."
Previous Congress government had made deals with private firms to develop six power projects in the state.
Several parties, including the influential Khasi Students Union, have smelled a rat in the deals, saying they violated the state's power policy and were not done in a transparent manner.
Meanwhile, the government has distributed a copy of the recommendation made by an expert committee on ramifications of the deals to its cabinet members.
The cabinet is expected to meet next week to decide on the fate of the power deals.
All the alliance partners of the MPA government will also meet next week to exchange views on the deals.
There was no official word from the government side as yet on the issue.
